Should Lightweight Rowers Have a High Rate? An analysis of the Athens 2004 Lightweight mens 2x final
Here we have the lightweight men's 2x final at the athens olympcis. Being a close to lightweight rower this race has inspired me to write a comment.
I have always been in confusion regarding why lightweight rowers row at a very high rate. Italians Elia Luini and his partner, are examples of lwt rowers who row at the rate of close of 40 spm. So, the danish crew you see in the video. The french normally are elegant in the way they row but in this particular race frederic dufour and pascal tourin seem to have fallen into the trap of elevating the rate by have a quick return. They win the silver.
What is amazing is Polish crew...the pols just rocked in the race getting into a beautiful rowing rhythm letting the boat glide at the finish..and then returning in regular fashion..and driving with balanced power during the entire stroke. Denmark's dead at the end of the race..no wonder..I knew this would happen when I saw them go.
Comparing this to how good hwt rowers like Mahe drysdale row.. They use the momentum to let the boat glide at the finish. Using every second of the drive efficiently. One might argue that lwt rowers dont have the momentum that a hwt rower has..but watch this video..and think again...plaisir a faire d'aviron along with gold medal in the bag!

My Comments on the Journee du 8+
From my experience, France and Bretagne in particular not have the culture of rowing in 8s. Reasons given to me were:
a) Thats American !
b) Its hard to have 8 people row in an sweeping boat the first time.
c) Its easier to start sculling
Reason (a) is the most obnoxious reason I have ever heard. I started rowing in Canada on an 8. I think sculling and sweeping both have their challenges and are equally hard.
From, the Olympic rowing point of view France has been performing well in smaller boats such as 2-,4x+, 4-, 2x etc. however, they certainly have not produced good results when it comes to rowing in the 8. Several other nations including the Americans and Canadians pay special attention to developing a strong 8.
The 8+, ladies and gentleman constitutes the blue ribbon event. The idea of sucking in one's pride and to trust 7 others and row together , in my opinion, captures the true spirit of rowing.
The 8 has also served as the boat smoothly welcoming beginners in university after one season of rowing. The smaller boats are more challenging, and not to mention relatively boring.
I would certainly like to solicit comments about why France lacks this culture of encouraging rowers to row in 8s.

Journne Nationale du 8+
The day of the 8s in France is a national event on one day of the year. In the city of Rennes, this event is normally organized by REC Aviron, however this year it was organized by Societe de Regate Rennaise . This event was organized by this club due to their 160th anniversary.
"The weather was bad on the 18th of November. A detailed account of the day (for REC aviron) is summarized here by Eric: "Trois équipages du REC disputaient l’édition 2007 de la JN 8+ : un bateau féminin, un masculin et un mixte.
Venez nombreux!"
